On Sunday, February 28th, 2010, we hosted a Community Tax Day at Saint Alphonsus in East LA, CA. There was also a Community Resource Fair on hand to introduce the taxpayers we served and patrons of Saint Alphonsus about other services and programs available to them through other Community-Based Organizations in their neighborhood. Representatives from the Census were also there to help get the word out on the Census 2010.

Lancaster Tax Day – Photos

On Saturday, February 20th, 2010, we hosted a Community Tax Day at AVPH (Antelope Valley Partners for Health) in Lancaster, CA. We were joined by staff from United Way’s Antelope Valley office, their local donors, and staff from AVPH to serve the residents of Lancaster and the surrounding neighborhoods.

Thank you again to all the volunteers from the Community Tax Day at AVPH. Together, we helped 38 families claim over $65,000 in total refunds in just under 6 hours! Great job everyone!

Pacoima Tax Day – Photos

On Saturday, February 6th, 2010, we hosted a Community Tax Day at MEND (Meet Each Need with Dignity) in Pacoima, CA. On this day, we had special guest visits from LA City Councilmeber Richard Alarcón and his staff, IRS SPEC Area Director L’Tanya Brooks, and IRS SPEC LA Territory Manager Connie Stewart.

Thank you again to all the volunteers from the Community Tax Day at MEND. Together, we helped 32 families claim over $52,000 in total refunds in less than 5 hours! Great job everyone!

United Way & LA CDD Commended by LA City Council – Photos

At a Los Angeles City Council Meeting On Friday, February 5th, 2010, City Councilmember Richard Alarcón presented United Way of Greater Los Angeles and the LA Community Development Department (CDD) with Certificates of Appreciation to recognize their efforts to promote greater access of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and expand free tax services available to LA City residents through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.

At this City Council Meeting, a resolution was also unanimously passed by the Councilmembers to declare Saturday, February 6, 2010, as “LA EITC Awareness Day,” which coincided with the Partnership’s Community Tax Day in Pacoima, CA. Please continue on to read our post on the Pacoima Tax Day.

On Wednesday, February 3rd, our partners UNITE-LA, held a press conference at Helen Bernstein High School in Hollywood to announce their 2010 LA Cash For College campaign. They were joined by City of LA Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and UTLA President Monica Garcia to name a few.

A big congratulations to David Rattray, Alma Salazar, and their entire Cash For College team on their very successful Super Saturday, which took place on January 30th, 2010. During their Super Saturday, they were able to help thousands of college-bound students from high schools throughout LA County complete their FAFSA applications. This is such an important campaign that assists so many students in realizing their dreams of further education and a better future. Wilmington Tax Day – Photos

Representatives from State Controller John Chiang’s office, along with United Way staff and community volunteers, joined to provide free income tax preparation services at YMCA of Wilmington.

Gang Alternatives Program (GAP) provided laptop computers and the use of their mobile technology van <– very cool! The day could not have happened without their partnership. This is the only free income tax preparation site in LA County with it’s own satellite dish.

Special thanks to the Orange County Chapter of the Financial Planners Association, IRS, Long Beach Community Action Partnership, and YMCA staff for all their help and support to make this event extra special.

Pricewaterhouse Coopers Volunteers at EITC Launch

A handful of volunteers from Pricewaterhouse Coopers helped provide free income tax preparation services at the EITC launch on January 28, 2010 at El Centro del Pueblo.

State Controller John Chiang stopped by to thank the volunteers for their commitment to adopt El Centro del Pueblo’s free income tax preparation site.

United Way CEO Elise Buik, joined by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, State Controller John Chian, Council President Eric Garcetti participated in the launch of the EITC Campaign at El Centro del Pueblo. El Centro del Pueblo is one of 21 FamilySource Centersproviding free income tax preparation through April.

EITC Campaign which helps low-income, working families get their taxes prepared for free and claim refunds up to $5,657.
